8 Tips to Plan the Perfect Central Park Walking Tour

There are many different ways that you can explore Central Park. The most basic option is to take a walking tour. This is a great way to get some exercise while enjoying the attractions which make Central Park so renowned.

If you go on a walking tour unprepared, however, there can be some pitfalls. You might fatigue sooner than you expect, and you might not get around to seeing everything that you have planned. The following tips will help you to have the best possible experience on your Central Park walking tour.

1. Decide whether to take a guided or self-guided tour.

There are two main options for Central Park walking tours. You can either book a reservation on a guided walking tour, or you can explore the park at your own pace on foot.

Both options have pros and cons. You’ll have to decide for yourself which one better suits your style for exploring.

2. Get a map and plan a route.

If you want to maximize how much you can see and do as you walk around the park, downloading one or more maps is a must. You can visit this page to download map of Central Park.

It should go without saying, but do not forget to actually print out these materials and carry them with you when you go on your walk.

3. Figure out which attractions you most want to see.

While you are looking through the map above, you can think about which attractions are the biggest draw for you in Central Park. Try and pick a route which will get you to as many of those as possible.

Keep in mind though that there is a good chance you still will not be able to see absolutely everything that you are hoping to. Figure out your priorities in advance so that you do not need to make difficult decisions structuring your time while you are on your walking tour.

4. Think about how long you will need at each attraction.

Speaking of time, it is smart to ask yourself how long you plan to spend at each of your stops. Be realistic about this, and try to tack on a little more time than you think you will need for each.

5. Plan rest breaks.

While walking can be a fun and relaxing activity, it can also wear out your feet surprisingly quickly. Along with your planned stops for activities, you will need to account for rest stops and restrooms at regular intervals. This is especially important if you will have children with you during your Central Park walking adventure.

6. Learn the rules.

While you have quite a bit of freedom while you’re in Central Park, there are some things that you cannot do, like drink alcohol or smoke. Be sure to familiarize yourself with the full list of Central Park Rules & Regulations.

7. Pack the supplies you will need for a comfortable walk.

To enjoy yourself as much as possible during your Central Park tour, you’ll need to bring all the supplies with you which you may need during a long day of walking.

At a minimum, that means wearing comfortable shoes with quality tread and bringing water so that you can stay hydrated. You also may want to pack a picnic lunch, or at the very least, bring along some snacks. Again, this is particularly helpful if you have children with you.

You may consider carrying a small first aid kit. This can certainly mean a better day if, for example, one of your children slips while running around in the woods, and skins a knee.

If anyone is prone to headaches, it is also wise to bring some ibuprofen (especially since it is easier to get dehydrated walking around the park on a hot day than you might think).

8. Take money with you (including cash).

Central Park itself is a free attraction. Anyone can come an go as they please without paying a fee. But there are activities in the park which do require a fee, such as admission to the Central Park Zoo.

It is also useful to bring money with you to buy food and beverages, and you should carry some cash if you would like to donate to street performers as well.
